The 36th Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU) President, Comr. Adebola Joldie brought together students on campus for a two-day empowerment programme themed “Ability Unleashed” for those living with disabilities. The first session was held on Thursday, July 31st, at the Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre, Ojo campus.
It began with a walk across the school, serving as a show of unity and a call to raise awareness about disability inclusion. Afterwards, attendees moved into the conference centre where the main event continued.
The programme featured honest conversations, moving performances, and the distribution of assistive tools. It focused on breaking down the barriers faced by students with disabilities within and beyond LASU.
Following an opening prayer, an address was delivered on behalf of Mrs. Adekola Oluwafunmilayo, a representative of the Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASODA). She spoke about the People With Disabilities (PWDs) initiative and stressed the need for specially trained teachers who can meet the learning needs of students living with disabilities.
Dr. Mohamed, another speaker, addressed common misconceptions about disabilities. He cautioned against feel-good slogans like “disability lives in ability” when real structural support is missing. “We must stop romanticising struggle and start building support systems that work,” he said.
The event drew several notable guests, including Mrs. Adekola, the Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Education, LASU; the President of the Lagos State Chapter of the Disabled Association; and the Vice President of the University of Lagos National Chapter of the Disabled. Students and disability advocates were also present, showing strong support for the cause.
One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of assistive materials by the 35th LASUSU President. Beneficiaries, including UNILAG attendees, received digital sound recorders, specially adapted computers for the visually impaired, wheelchairs, and crutches. These tools are expected to significantly improve access and independence.
There were also spoken word performances, a live music set by PWD students, and panel discussions that addressed the role of mindset, policy, and community in building truly inclusive environments.
Though no follow-up events were announced, the message of the day was clear. Inclusion is not a favour. It is a right. And it is time everyone treated it that way.
