OJUDE LASU; IS IT POSSIBLE?

Ojude Oba is a rich cultural festival celebrated amongst the people of Ijebu-ode. It is the celebration where every household, clan, and villages gather to honour their heritage and express their traditions through different music, dance, and fashion. It’s known for its vibrancy and beautiful diversity.

Notably, the finalists from LASULAW were pioneers in recreating this grand ceremony within an academic setting. For a faculty-level initiative, their execution was nothing short of outstanding. Building on this idea, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) took it a step further, becoming the first institution to host the festival at a university-wide scale.

The event gained significant traction, trending across social media platforms for days, and earned a lot of commendation for its creativity, cultural richness, and flawless delivery.

Now, in a move to reclaim the spotlight, LASUSU Social Director Olamilekan Leon Adegoke has announced that plans are already in motion for a full-scale Ojude Oba celebration in LASU.

Anticipatory graphics have begun to circulate to this effect But this brings us to one lingering question:

Can LASU pull it off? Let’s take a moment to think back.

We recall that on Tuesday, May 27th, LASU Costume Day was held. It’s safe to say the event received a significant amount of publicity within the LASU community. However, despite the intense promotion, the event saw a majority lack of interest among Lasuites.

It’s important to note that this outcome wasn’t due to any failure on the part of the Social Director. Rather, it reflected a deeper issue: the indifference of many students toward social events that celebrate fashion, art, and culture.

Ojude Oba is celebrated for its diversity and vibrancy, and its success depends heavily on active participation. In a community where events that promote culture and creativity often struggle to attract interest, the current track record suggests that without a shift in mindset and strategy, LASU might fall short. But with the right strategies,fresh approach, and collective willingness,success is still attainable.

So, what’s the plan? What is changing?

Our editorial board attempted to reach out to the organizing committee multiple times for comment on their implementation plans, but unfortunately, we were met with silence. Given the absence of a response, we can only speculate that we reaching out prompted them to go back to their drawing board.

That should be the only explanation, or Ojude LASU might currently be crippled.

Our advice : 1. Get involvedThis shouldn’t just be a Social Director thing. It can’t even just be a Social Director thing. The entire school should feel like it has a hand in this. From the Faculty of Arts to even down to Epe campus, if everyone’s involved from the start, people will actually care.

2. Make it feel real.Don’t just throw on a few iro and buba and call it Ojude Oba. Bring in culture. Get traditional performers. Reach out to alumni who understand the roots. Let culture lead, not aesthetics._We strongly advise that the planning committee should be made up of at least one person from each faculty so as to ensure inclusivity._Ojude Oba is a big deal in Nigeria. It’s not just a “fashion show.” It’s a full celebration of identity, heritage, and elegance.

FUNAAB proved it can be done excellently in a university. They set the bar, and they set it high.If LASU tries and doesn’t measure up, the consequences go beyond one bad day.

Let’s paint the picture:1. Students could be embarrassed even outside the school: Nobody wants their university to trend for the wrong reasons. One underwhelming video can go viral, and suddenly, LASU is in the middle of jokes online.

2. Recent graduates could take the hit: Imagine a fresh LASU graduate applying for jobs, and a recruiter brings up “that cringy Ojude LASU event.” It sounds far-fetched, but realistic.

3. The creative students will get discouraged: Students who care about culture, fashion, and events might stop trying. Why put in the effort when no one shows up or takes it seriously?

4. Future events will suffer: If Ojude LASU flops, it makes it harder for other organizations in school to host events because it would discourage potential partners and sponsors.

This is just an admonition to both the students and the planning committee of this event. We respect the initiative, and we see it to be a creative one at that. However, we imploy the planning committee and the student populace to step up their game and make this a success. The success and reputation of our school in social activities like this is our pride.

If we get it right, Ojude LASU can be historic. But if we don’t, well… Twitter won’t be kind.
