LASUSU-SPC SUSPENDS VICE PRESIDENT OVER DISRESPECT TO THE HOUSE

The Vice President of the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), Comrade Ramon Rihanat, was suspended by the Speaker of the Students’ Parliamentary Council (SPC) during the Budget Sitting held at the Hallowed Chambers, Students’ Arcade, on February 7, 2025.

The two-week suspension followed a motion raised by an Honourable member, citing Comrade Rihanat’s rude conduct and disrespect toward the House. The motion was seconded by another Honourable member and subsequently approved and gavelled by the Speaker, Rt. Honourable Adedeji Adeniyi.

According to reports, the Vice President was accused of displaying an unremorseful attitude during the session. Comrade Rihanat reportedly walked out of the sitting and refused to return despite repeated calls from the Speaker. This incident was noted as part of a pattern of disrespectful behaviour toward the House, with indications that it was not the first time the Vice President had acted in such a manner.

The decision to suspend the Vice President was backed by the LASUSU Constitution, which grants the Speaker authority to preside over joint meetings of the Students’ Executive Council (SEC), Students’ Parliamentary Council (SPC), and Students’ Judicial Council (SJC).

According to the LASUSU Constitution, the secretary of the Standing Committee on Academics, Okenla Samuel, will immediately assume the role of the Acting Vice President of the Lagos State University.

Despite the Speaker’s official gaveling of the motion, Comrade Rihanat reportedly declined to return to the Chambers. However, the suspension remains in effect as declared by the Speaker.
