The Lagos State University Student Union (LASUSU) is poised to introduce significant changes to its constitution, with several new bills proposed to enhance student governance. Three key bills have gained attention, aiming to promote academic excellence, define misconduct, and recognize the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.
A bill Sponsored by Honourable Kazeem Abdullahi from the Faculty of Transport proposes a minimum CGPA of 3.50 for students running for positions in the Students Executive Council (SEC) and Student Parliamentary Council (SPC) as academic Excellence is paramount and the primary assignment in school.
A Gross Misconduct Definition Bill sponsored by Honourable Ajibola Kazeem of the Faculty of Arts, seeking to clearly define gross misconducts and empower the SPC to suspend or impeach students guilty of such offenses.
Honourable Mohammed Fawaz (Faculty of Engineering) proposes recognizing the Faculty of Environmental Sciences as a distinct faculty with its own union, integrating it into the LASUSU structure.
These bills will undergo a second reading before seeking executive consent. If approved, they will become part of the LASUSU constitution.
The proposed changes aim to promote accountability, academic excellence, and inclusivity within the student union.
