Judging from the turnout and paparazzi of the matriculating students earlier this week, a “Honeymoon” would have been advised because after the huge glamour of an Owanmbe, what comes next?
Not to offend anyone, a huge congratulations to the newly admitted students of Lagos State University who matriculated into the campus this week.
Let’s go back to the question asked earlier—after eating matriculation rice, what next? Should we assume that you have started experiencing one shege or the other as a LASUite? Especially as you try to sail through the hustles and bustles of campus life. Well, we are glad to announce to you that this is just the beginning. Dear fresher, please take a seat and tighten your belt as you begin your academic journey in this prestigious school because it will definitely come with many ups and downs. If you are not careful, you might end up having an unexplainable crash We are LASU, we are… We hope you finish this yourself.
There are many administrative offices in LASU. This means LASU doesn’t just run on its own but operates through certain personalities who oversee its smooth running. It is important for you to have an inclination toward certain words, abbreviations, and names you must have been hearing all around the school.
We are sure most people have been to the students’ arcade, but they don’t know what LASUSU is. Some have visited the Love Garden to find love but don’t know the name of their Vice Chancellor. And some have spent these few months in school walking in and out of their lecturers’ offices with little knowledge about LIDC (very dangerous).
It would be shameful to be ignorant of this pivotal information. Therefore, this piece has been written to inform you about the necessary things you need to know as a freshman. However, this article is not expendable for the Staylites. Read on and catch up!
The Lagos State University (LASU) is currently presided over by Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, the Vice-Chancellor of the school. Next to her in government are the Deputy Vice-Chancellors of Academics and Administration. However, the nearest government to the students, which is also the authority in charge of student welfare and affairs, is the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU).
The body is currently headed by Comr. Adebobola Joldie, the 35th President of the Union. There are different arms of this Students’ Union body, such as the Students’ Parliamentary Council (SPC) and the Students’ Judicial Council (SJC).
These bodies are one, and they work together for the welfare and well-being of the students.
Examination alert!!! It is no news that the university’s first-semester examination for the 2024/2025 session will commence on the 3rd of March, 2025. If this is news to you, now you know. As the popular saying goes, “Ignorance is the mother of all evil.” So, in order to not be a victim of the evil that comes with facing your first examination in a tertiary institution without proper preparation, you are advised to pay close attention to the following details.
The compulsory, periodic exam is not something to be anxious about. All you need is to be well-informed, prepared, and focused. This degree thing no be beans o. As a full-time undergraduate student, you are expected to sit for your exams in order to avoid automatic failure for the semester.
So, in case you are planning to miss your exams, we advise you to rethink. Now that you know you must sit for your exams, there are further tips and instructions you need to know in order to have a successful and hitch-free experience.
The university’s portal is currently open for students to register for the courses they are expected to offer for the semester. This activity allows the Lagos State University Integrated Data Center (LIDC) to register your courses, include you among those that will sit for the specific exams, and release your results at the end of the exams.
Therefore, no course registration equals no exam, and no exam equals no result. This is a costly mistake that will hinder your graduation. However, a sense of caution is needed while registering, as some may mistakenly register for courses they are not supposed to offer. This would automatically bring about failure and a disappointing Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) when results are released. If you haven’t registered your courses, this is a subtle reminder that the portal will be closed on the 23rd of February.
This is also a reminder that you can’t be a lone wolf in LASU. Do not consider going offline especially during exams. Most importantly, always have a data subscription. If you go offline for a minute, the next thing you might hear is convocation. This is a free advice.
Now, let’s talk about the ambiance during examination days. The entrance of each examination center is usually manned by Marshalls and assigned speculators who will assess students’ physical appearances and documents. Documents like your ID card, examination dockets, and venue checkers (for CBT exams) are usually required.
You are coming for an exam with a slide? Wow! Indaboski!
In LASU, improper dressing is taboo. Even though enforcement sometimes goes to the extreme, it is responsible to adhere. Wearing slippers and other prohibited items is not condoned. You are expected to dress decently and neatly to your examination centers. Don’t say we didn’t tell you!
This piece would be incomplete without mentioning the danger of engaging in examination malpractice. This act comes with stern repercussions that can ruin the academic history of a student. By all means, avoid examination malpractice and all forms of implications. To be forewarned, they say, is to be forearmed.
The best way to ace your exams is by diligently preparing for each paper, being equipped with the right materials to study, and joining beneficial study groups. Amidst the anxiety and various emotions that overwhelm students before, during, and after exams, it is important to plan your time well, put in your best efforts, and strive toward excellence. Remember, writing exams is like cooking because, at the end of it, you will be served (LIDC).
As a LASUite, do not let drama and gist pass you by. If you know how interesting and entertaining it is to watch movies without paying, you will understand this aspect. No one will tell you for free. However, this is us saying it on a free scale: Do not ever miss a LASUSU gist. It is more salivating than your roommate’s food. You will enjoy it to the fullest. In LASU, there’s drama. In fact, LASU is drama. Apart from getting a degree, stay aware of things happening around you.
Just to be sure, did you hear of the recent suspension of the LASUSU vice president and Legal Director for rude attitude and misuse of office respectively? What about the exposing of the 2.7m between the 34th LASUSU administration? This happened just this week. The former Social Director, Funkizzy, called out the former president, Tobun, as being a thief and unaccountable. LASUSU is filled with drama and you can’t afford to miss all of this!
