Today, October 6th, 2025, marks a new era for the Freshmen or should I say New Cats of Lagos State University, as they officially resume for the 2025/2026 session.
Becoming a LASUite is by no means a small feat because out of thousands of students, particularly the 70,080 applicants who made LASU their first choice university in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), only a select few have been admitted. However, while congratulations are as loud as ever, it is important to note that gaining admission into LASU is not the end of the journey, in fact, it is just the beginning. The university environment is a far cry from the structured world of secondary school.
LASU is a community on its own where independence is key, and survival is paramount.There are no class teachers to remind you of deadlines or parents to wake you up for lectures, or whips for coming late to the lecture hall.
Every student is responsible for their choices, their performance, and their growth. Here, adaptation is crucial, you’ll need to learn and follow the University’s rules and regulations, some of which may seem unusual at first.
Finding Your Way
As freshers, there are numerous challenges which may come your way, one of which is navigating the Campus. LASU’s campus is vast and full of life, and it gets tough to locate one or two important buildings or even lecture halls, especially during the first two weeks of resumption.
You don’t want to have a lecture by 8am, and by 7:50am, you are still struggling to find the lecture room. As funny as this sounds, it happens, and many staylites had this experience in their first year.
However, the best way to sail through this not-so-funny hurdle is to either ask random passersby for directions, or rely on official signposts or verified student guides like maps which can be found on the school’s portal to avoid being misled in the wrong direction.
And Freshmen, try to avoid or reduce asking the question of “Are you also a fresher?” This question might seem harmless, but many staylites despise such a question, so in order not to provoke anyone unknowingly, it is important to ask for help without that question, in most cases.
Important Registrations
Another process which every new student must partake in is the long registration process, which is mandatory and compulsory. From the departmental registration to the faculty registration, to getting documents like the Anti cult oath form, sworn affidavit of good conduct, attestation later, just to mention a few.
Do not be surprised to find that you’ll be needing quite a number of print-outs, photocopies and passports, and like they say, “You can never have too many passports in LASU.” It is advisable to get the necessary documents ready before attempting to register and also get enough passports for it.
As much as these registrations can be tiring, it is better to complete a good number of them before the first semester’s examination. The hustle that comes with deadline registration is not just stressful, but comes with extra expenses, and so much pressure.
Build A Solid Result
Your first year in LASU is the best time to lay a solid academic foundation. Courses at this level are mostly introductory and foundational, often similar to subjects studied in secondary, although a bit higher. In light of this, it’s the best opportunity to build a strong Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) before the workload becomes heavier in subsequent levels.
The higher you go, the more demanding it gets, so use this year wisely. Attend lectures; submit assignments before the deadline; join study groups; respect your coursemates and lecturers, and don’t hesitate to seek help when needed.
In all, LIDC is watching; watch out for the students in 200 level – 400 level drama in the coming days, and you will understand what it means in full fold. In LASU, we have the Grade Point Average (GPA) and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), and to understand this easily, the handbook of each departments clearly explains this.
The school portal is one for many tasks, it has a lot of sub portals on it such as the Lagos State University Central Admissions Clearance Application (LACACA), payment portals and the Lasu Integrated Data Center (LIDC), where your results for each semester is uploaded.
Be Information-conscious
Adjusting to campus life is a whole lot, the university is a whole new world, gone are the days of constant supervision, here, you either rise or fall, while it takes time to find balance and to understand when to read, rest, and socialize. it is important to note that university is a place where you have to always be active both online and physically, as most messages are always passed across online.
It is also important to have good friends who are focused on their academics and can relay information to you if you’re unable to easily access information shared across, this will make your journey in school a smooth one.
Say No To Indecent Dressing
Every freshman would have probably heard one or two about LASU’s strict laws against indecent dressing. Those hearsays are not just mere tales, but are real truths that can either make or mar your stay on campus.
One of such rules is the wearing of palm/slippers to campus-the University is strictly against it to the extent that the marshals on campus go all out to seize it from students. To be on the safer side, it is better to wear sandals or shoes to avoid trouble.
Another thing is decent hairstyles in males and females. Females are expected to pack their hair properly from the school gates and even in the lecture halls. There are so many lecturers who can send you out of the classes for disobeying such a rule that looks small.
For the guys, it is important to cut trimmed hairstyles and avoid dreads or haircuts that would always get you in the face of lecturers or marshals. Earrings are not left out also for both genders, as a female can be sent out of the class for putting on a very large earring-while the males who put on earrings face issues from very strict lecturers, who don’t necessarily have to be in their department.
Dressing properly to official spaces would also save you a lot of stress. The saying “dress the way you want to be addressed,” has never been a joke, especially in LASU.
You can easily be sent out of an office for failing to dress appropriately. Wisdom is profitable to direct, it is better to start on a good note, and avoid these little troubles as much as you can in order to have a fulfilling stay on campus. 4 years is not so long as it seems, and making good use of it is paramount.
Keep being the good child that your parents trained, avoid bad friends and be prayerful, the university is a battlefield on its own and only the strong and steadfast can stand the test. While it might take some a bit of time to adjust to their new environment, others would easily blend in and even become popular in their first year.
In all, the candid advice from LASU Conscience to all freshmen officially resuming today, is to Start early from registrations, to attending lectures, to submitting assignments, medicals, and most importantly, Money is important to sail through LASU.
