ARE EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY ACTUALLY WORTH IT?

According to the 2025/2026 JAMB analysis, Lagos State University (LASU) emerged as the most preferred university in Nigeria, with over 70,000 applicants choosing it as their first choice. This raises an interesting question: why did so many students choose LASU out of more than 300 universities across the country?

While LASU is widely recognized for its academic excellence, what happens beyond the classroom is equally significant in students’ lives. Extra-curricular activities play a major role in shaping students’ experiences by helping them develop skills, networks, and values that remain valuable long after graduation.

In this article, we explore the world of extra-curricular activities on the LASU campus — examining their benefits, challenges, and the impact they have on students’ lives.

THE CULTURE OF CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT

Over the years, Lagos State University has built a strong culture of student engagement beyond academics. Today, LASU is home to a wide range of student-led organizations, creative clubs, and leadership platforms that cater to diverse interests.

From student politics under the Lagos State University Students’ Union Government (LASUSU) to several student-led organizations including: the LASU Debate Society (LSUDS), LASU Conscience, Junior Chamber International (JCIN-LASU), the LASU SDG Club, just to mention a few, LASUites have numerous platforms to express their voices and showcase their talents.

It is safe to say that every student can find a place in LASU’s extra-curricular world, regardless of their talent or passion. The sports scene also thrives with active participation in football, basketball, table tennis, and other games. Regular competitions — from inter-faculty matches to inter-school tournaments — promote teamwork, healthy competition, and school pride.

The university also embraces creativity and innovation through Theatre Arts productions, music performances, dance troupes, and tech communities such as the LASU Tech Hub, which provides opportunities for students interested in coding, design, and digital entrepreneurship.

Through these activities, both the university management and student leaders have worked hand in hand to ensure that life at LASU extends beyond the four walls of the classroom.

BENEFITS OF GETTING INVOLVED

Many LASUites who participate in extra-curricular activities testify to their life-changing benefits. For some, it’s an opportunity to build leadership and communication skills; for others, it’s a source of personal growth, creativity, and confidence.

“Politics has given me a voice and prepared me for leadership,” says Dayo, a 200-level student and departmental Public Relations Officer.

“Debating has boosted my self-confidence, improved my speaking skills, and taught me how to think critically,” adds Chioma, a member of the LASU Debate Society.

But the benefits go far beyond politics or debating. Engaging in these activities also helps students develop problem-solving abilities and time-management skills—qualities essential for success after graduation. They also provide a platform to make friends, build networks, and connect with like-minded individuals who share similar goals and aspirations.

CHALLENGES THAT COME WITH PARTICIPATION

Like the saying goes, “everything that has an advantage also has a disadvantage.” As rewarding as extra-curricular activities are, they come with certain challenges.

Balancing academics and extra-curricular involvement is one of the biggest struggles LASUites face. The demanding academic schedule often discourages participation or forces students to take breaks from activities they love. Many fear that taking on too much could affect their grades.

“Balancing academics and extra-curricular activities is challenging,” says Rhoda, a 100-level student. “I’d like to focus on my C.G.P.A while I’m in 100 level.”

Similarly, Deborah, a 200-level student, admits, “I can’t handle the stress because I won’t be able to balance it with my academics.”

Another concern among students is the limited diversity of clubs and societies. Some believe that LASU could do more to create clubs focused on language learning, photography, entrepreneurship, and creative arts, not just department-based associations. This would encourage more students to participate in activities that genuinely align with their interests.

MAKING IT COUNT: THE LASTING IMPACT

Despite the hurdles, those who successfully balance both academics and extra-curricular life often say the rewards are worth the effort.

During an interview LASU Conscience had with the Best Graduating Student for 2024/2025, Nwosu Isioma Sybil, she said: “I was into extra-curricular activities. I was into politics; I was the Speaker of my department and I also had a social life. What I did was to balance them. I knew that my academics were my priority, so I gave twice as much time to my studies as I did to social activities.”

Other students share similar sentiments. “Being part of politics is something I’ve always planned and prepared for,” says Dayo. “I make sure it doesn’t affect my studies; instead, it helps me manage my time better.”

For many, extra-curricular activities serve as a bridge between classroom learning and real-world experience. They build discipline, confidence, and leadership—while also enhancing résumés and preparing students for future opportunities.

At the end of the day, university life isn’t just about attending lectures or chasing grades. It’s about growth, balance, and purpose. Whether it’s leading a student association, volunteering for a social cause, or representing LASU in competitions, these experiences shape students into well-rounded individuals ready to thrive beyond university life.

MAKING THE MOST OF IT

So, are extra-curricular activities at LASU actually worth it? Absolutely — but only when approached with balance and intention. The key is learning how to prioritize.

Academics should remain the foundation, but getting involved in meaningful activities can complement that foundation beautifully. It’s about choosing wisely, managing time effectively, and engaging in what genuinely adds value to your personal and professional growth.

As a LASUite, you don’t have to do everything — just do something that makes you better. Because beyond the classroom, that’s where real learning begins.
