THEMED: “SURVIVAL”, IWS HOST WRITERS’ SYMPOSIUM , ADOPTS NEW NAME AND ELECT NEW EXECUTIVES

The Ingenious Wepolit Society, now renamed ‘Ingenious Writers’ Society,’ organized a writers’ symposium themed “Survival” on the 1st of August, 2025, at the students’ conference hall, Arcade. The symposium sought to celebrate, and enlighten student writers who are faced with certain struggles in the creative field. In conjunction, newly elected leaders of the society were announced.

IWS, the official writing organization of Lagos State University, is a society that trains and grooms students on how to channel their inner creativity to become writers of various genres. Like the society’s motto implies, “Transforming the world using the pen,” has gone beyond an ordinary statement, but a mission that has been passionately carried out over the years by the founder, alumni, executives, and members of the society.

In his welcome address, the President of the union, Olawale Muheez- who has been elected as the ex-officio of the next administration-stated the goals of the society, its achievements thus far, and how the symposium is another way to cheer growing writers into advancement, “we are here to confront the challenges faced by the young and growing writers, especially the ones in Nigeria,” he said. He also mentioned that there has been a change in the society’s name, due to difficulty understanding the concept of “Wepolit,” among students. The union now goes by “Ingenious Writers’ Society.”

The guest speakers, Ayo Oladiran and Aina Ayomide, graced the occasion with their presence and exceptionality. The first speaker, Ayo Oladiran, the Deputy Editor-in-chief of LASU-Life, spoke broadly on the topic “Survival as a writer.” Sharing her experiences and struggles as a growing writer, Ayo stated that “survival is staying alive and living through every situation-however unpleasant.” She further highlighted six major situations that define survival for writers, all of which point to being “resilient.”

Sharing her experience on the topic “Survival,” Aina Ayomide, the President of the LASU Debate Society, explained how she has not only survived but thrived as a student. She emphasized how the mindset is a major factor of what defines people, and their view of growth. Aina encouraged the audience to have a growing mindset, not one that is static, unbelieving, and easily discouraged.

As the symposium came to a close, winners of the ‘Ingenious Writers’ Society’ Creative Non-fiction Competition were announced, applauded and certified. EGELE AYOMIDE, a contestant from the Faculty of Education, emerged as the winner.

In an emotional moment, the baton of leadership was transferred, as the new Executives of the organization were officially inaugurated, with Rianot Ajoke Haruna emerging as the President, and Baseeroh Adegbaike emerging as the Vice President.
