COMR. DA-SILVA OPENITEMI DAVID: A PASSIONATE ADVOCATE FOR STUDENT WELFARE AND GOOD GOVERNANCE

Comr. Da-silva Openitemi David, a 300-level student of the Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, Lagos State University (LASU), is steadily making a name for himself through dedicated service in both faculty and university-wide representative councils.

Currently an Honourable member of the LASUSU Students’ Parliamentary Council (SPC), and also serving in the Faculty of Science’s Student Legislative Council (SLC), Comr. David has consistently positioned himself at the intersection of governance and social impact. In addition to his legislative duties, he represents students on the LASU Security Committee, where matters relating to student safety—both on and off campus—are discussed and addressed.

Driven by a deep passion for student social welfare, Comr. David has championed several initiatives aimed at improving the lives of students, particularly those facing financial challenges. His focus has been on connecting underprivileged but innovative students with resources, networks, and funding opportunities that can foster growth and academic stability.

In an environment where public scrutiny often shadows student politics, Comr. David distinguishes himself through a commitment to transparency. With no record of financial misconduct, he has instead challenged budgetary excesses in legislative discussions, advocating for cuts where allocations appeared inflated—a rare stance in student politics and one that has earned him the respect of many.

This commitment to service recently placed him at the centre of a parliamentary debate after he introduced a survey bill under the LASUSU SPC platform. The bill sought to explore new sources of income to support the Social Welfare Committee’s outreach. However, the move stirred opposition for not having the full consensus of the SPC members. To address the situation, an ad-hoc committee was set up to investigate and mediate the issue. Despite the disagreement, Comr. David’s underlying goal—to improve support for financially vulnerable students—remained evident.

With a track record marked by integrity, advocacy, and results, Comr. Da-silva Openitemi David continues to leave a footprint in student governance, championing a culture of accountability and purposeful leadership within and beyond the university community.
