The Faculty of Arts of Lagos State University held a Financial Integrity Symposium, organized by the Auditor General, Comr. Lukman Barakat at the Hallowed Chambers, Students’ Arcade, on the 18th of June, 2025.
The symposium, themed “The Key to Unlocking New Opportunities,” focused on enlightening the student populace on the value of money, its uses, and how to become ambassadors of honesty, discipline, and accountability in the financial world.
Delivering the keynote address, the representative of Mr. Taiwo Moshood Olaranmi stated the importance of financial integrity. According to him, financial integrity is a function of systems, not just individual effort. He emphasised separating financial roles—initiation, approval, and execution—to prevent abuse, alongside regular audits to ensure transparency. “All actions must align with the law,” he noted. Above all else, organizational needs should be considered before personal needs to ensure the mission is achieved.
Representing the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Oseni’s delegate underscored the personal and societal benefits of financial integrity. According to him, this virtue builds trust, enhances employability, reduces stress, and strengthens relationships.
He condemned lying for financial gain among students, reminding them that such misconduct could lead to suspension and eventual expulsion upon review. Students were encouraged to seek financial literacy, get mentors, and uphold honesty even without supervision. “If you see something, say something, and do something,” he advised.
The event also featured a reflective storytelling segment, where attendees were warned against shortcuts—they always lead to long-term damage—and reminded that “a promise is a debt,” literally. Students were urged to communicate clearly with lenders and honor their obligations. Financial integrity, according to the storyteller, safeguards one’s reputation and builds long-term relationships.
A panel discussion followed, moderated by Tema, and featured Great Joshua Aluko, CEO of Great People Association; Hon. Ashade Abdulsalaam Abiodun, of the Professional Accountant Youth Development Program; Senator Ishola Awwal Opeyemi, 35th LASUSU Auditor General; and Mr. Olaniyi Samsudeen Ojearigbo. The panelists described financial integrity as transparency, accountability, and a commitment to doing what is right, even under pressure. They advised students to cultivate discipline, develop useful skills, and stay financially independent in both mind and appearance.
In response to a question on maintaining integrity in a corrupt system, the panel encouraged leading by example rather than confrontation.
Addressing redemption after financial missteps, the panelists offered hope, stating that individuals can restore their reputation through consistent good choices, improved money habits, and careful planning using tools like SWOT analysis.
Students were urged to reflect on their values, honor their financial promises, and operate with clear financial plans.
