LASU ADVANCED TO THE SEMI-FINAL STAGE OF THE PRESTIGIOUS ECOWAS COURT MOOT COMPETITION

The Faculty of Law of the Lagos State University recently achieved a remarkable feat by reaching the semi-final stage of the prestigious ECOWAS Court Moot Competition, held at the ECOWAS Court of Justice headquarters in Abuja.

Out of 26 universities invited from across West Africa, 13 submitted written memorials, and just 8 qualified for the oral rounds. LASU proudly emerged among the final 4 semi-finalists, an achievement that highlights the university’s growing reputation in legal advocacy and international law.

The LASU team includes David Akinwunmi, Johnson Ogundein, and Olateju Atere, the current President of the Student Advocates’ Association, alongside their coach, Mr. Azeez Adeleke.

The team stood out throughout the competition for their distinctive approach and intellectual depth. Their performance drew praises from several members of the audience, including senior members of the organizing committee and a sitting Federal High Court judge, who commended the team for their excellent advocacy skills and deep understanding of complex legal issues.

The competition, founded on intellectualism, provided the participants with an opportunity to explore intricate aspects of international law and human rights law, particularly the jurisprudence and structure of the ECOWAS Court of Justice. Beyond the advocacy rounds, the event also provided a valuable platform for networking and peer learning.

Other participating universities included Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Ahmadu Bello University, the American University of Nigeria, and the University of Nigeria, among others—further elevating the prestige of LASU’s top-four finish.
