LASU ALUMNUS OLATUNJI DISU APPOINTED ACTING IGP

Lagos State University (LASU) has once again stamped its authority as a breeding ground for national leaders following the appointment of its alumnus, Mr Olatunji Disu, as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced Disu’s appointment on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, naming the 59-year old senior police officer as successor to the outgoing IGP. Kayode Egbetokun.

Disu, a graduate of English Education from LASU, also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration and another in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology. His academic and professional trajectory reflects the growing imprint of LASU alumni in strategic national institutions.

His emergence as Acting IGP comes at a critical moment for Nigeria’s internal security architecture. Having previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and later in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Disu brings decades of operational and administrative experience to the highest office in the Nigeria Police Force. He also served as Principal Staff Officer to the former IGP and led the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), one of the Force’s key tactical units.

Over the years, he has held several strategic roles, including: Divisional Police Officer (DPO), head of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and postings within the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex.

A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM), and the International Academy of Forensics, Disu’s career reflects a blend of academic depth and field experience.

Beyond policing, he is also known in sports circles as an accomplished judoka. In 2022, he clinched a silver medal at the U.S. Open Judo Championship, competing against over 500 international athletes, a feat that underscores discipline and resilience, qualities often associated with his leadership style.

For LASU, Disu’s appointment is more than a personal milestone; it is symbolic of the institution’s enduring contribution to national development. From its classrooms to the nation’s security command, the University continues to produce graduates who occupy pivotal roles in governance, administration, and public service.

Reacting to the development, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr Babatunde Ogala (SAN), OFR, alongside the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello,Mni on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, staff, students and alumni, congratulated Disu on what they described as a well-deserved appointment. They noted that his elevation to the position of Acting IGP reinforces LASU’s standing as an institution committed to excellence, leadership and national impact, expressing confidence in his capacity to strengthen reforms, deepen public trust and enhance service delivery within the Nigeria Police Force.

As he assumes office, members of the University community say his journey from LASU lecture halls to the highest Rank of national policing serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative role education plays in shaping leaders for the nation’s future.
