Lagos State Governor, and Visitor to Lagos State University (LASU), Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has appointed His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, as the sixth Chancellor of Lagos State University.
The appointment, announced on Sunday, February 15, 2026, marks an end to the tenure of Professor Gbolahan Elias, SAN, who served as the fifth Chancellor of the University.
According to the statement signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr Emmanuel A. Fanu, the appointment was made pursuant to the provisions of the Lagos State University Law, 2004 (as amended), Chapter L69, Volume 7, Schedule 1, which empowers the Visitor to appoint the Chancellor of the University.
Oba (Dr) Ogunsanwo’s appointment will take effect from Friday, February 13, 2026, for a term of five (5) years, which can be renewed once.
The Lagos State Government and the University community expressed appreciation to Professor Elias for his meritorious service, noting that he represented the institution with dignity throughout his tenure.
In congratulating the newly appointed Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor described the appointment as well-deserved and expressed optimism that his leadership would further advance the vision and mission of Lagos State University.
